Sinking of R/K NESTOR. On April 2, 2025, a historic moment unfolded in the crystal-clear waters of Ombros Gialos in Apokoronas, Chania, as the retired Hellenic Navy tugboat *R/K NESTOR* was deliberately sunk to create Greece’s first officially recognized diving park. This pioneering initiative marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to promote sustainable tourism, marine biodiversity, and alternative recreational activities.

The *R/K NESTOR*, a 23.5-meter-long vessel, now rests at a depth of approximately 15 meters, forming the centerpiece of a carefully designed underwater ecosystem. The project is part of a broader plan by the Region of Crete and the Municipality of Apokoronas to transform the area into a premier destination for diving enthusiasts from around the world.

Alongside the sunken vessel, 44 artificial reef structures have been installed, creating a dynamic marine environment that encourages the growth of marine flora and fauna. These structures are expected to become a haven for a wide variety of sea life, contributing to marine conservation efforts while enhancing the underwater experience for visitors.

The diving park features three designated underwater routes with varying degrees of difficulty, catering to both novice and experienced divers. Each route is clearly marked with lighted buoys to ensure safety and navigational ease. These routes will allow visitors to explore the wreck of the *NESTOR*, interact with the artificial reefs, and observe the gradual formation of a thriving aquatic ecosystem.

What sets this initiative apart is its multidimensional approach: it combines ecological restoration, heritage preservation, tourism development, and community engagement. The entire project was developed with the collaboration of marine scientists, diving professionals, local authorities, and environmental organizations, ensuring that all activities respect and protect the natural environment.

Funded by the Region of Crete, the diving park is expected to boost local economies, extend the tourist season, and establish Crete as a leader in sustainable maritime tourism in the Mediterranean. As the *R/K NESTOR* finds its second life beneath the sea, it invites the world to dive into a new era of underwater adventure in Greece.
