Limeni Wreck

The diving site is accessible by swimming from the shore.

Limeni Wreck description:

Limeni Wreck. Opposite the northern facade of the Mavromichalis’ monument, positioned near the Agios Sostis church in Limeni, lies a captivating secret beneath the waves—a colossal Roman shipwreck from the 1st century BC, situated roughly 30 meters offshore. This submerged relic possesses the potential to become the most renowned archaeological gem in Mani. Plunging to a modest depth of 4.5 meters, the site gracefully descends along a sloping underwater terrain, reaching depths of 21 meters.

Even from the water’s surface, the seabed hints at the treasure concealed below, showcasing an array of amphora fragments scattered about. In the year 1977, archaeologist Lazaros Kolonas conducted an insightful survey to identify and document the wreck’s existence. Encompassing an estimated area of 150 square meters, the wreckage bears the unfortunate scars of past pillaging, leaving behind a void where valuable artifacts once resided.

Predominantly laden with amphorae, the cargo offers a glimpse into the ancient maritime trade of the era. Strikingly similar in both period and size to the renowned Antikythera ship, this sunken marvel stands as a unique underwater exhibit, patiently awaiting its eventual revelation to the world.
